Nick Saban addressed Alabama’s biggest issue for the season during ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday. According to Saban, the primary challenge facing the Crimson Tide this season is their lack of consistency in play. He highlighted that the team’s performance has been uneven, impacting their ability to execute effectively on both sides of the ball. Saban emphasized the need for improved focus, discipline, and execution to address these inconsistencies and elevate the team’s overall performance.
“To me, the biggest issue with Alabama so far has been their ‘big-little,’” he explained.
“I always hated when our offense played ‘big-little.’ You make a lot of big plays, but then you have a lot of negative plays and inefficiency on offense, whether it’s sacks, fumbles, penalties, all the things that put you behind the down and distance so you can’t sustain long drives and keep the ball and control the tempo of the game.”
Nick Saban pointed out that Alabama’s issues this season include a significant number of penalties, with the Tide being flagged 20 times and averaging 89.5 yards in penalties per game. Additionally, Alabama has lost four of its six fumbles this season, contributing to their struggles.
Despite these challenges, Saban noted that there is some good news. He indicated that the team has the potential to improve and that there are positive aspects they can build on. Saban’s optimism is likely rooted in the team’s ability to address and correct these issues as the season progresses, focusing on improving discipline, ball security, and overall consistency.
“I think with the offensive line getting fixed today – I think both tackles will play today, which they didn’t play last week – I think that will help a lot,” he said. “Most of the teams that struggle are struggling up front, and, hopefully, Alabama can get that fixed today.”
