Injury Woes: More Bad News Emerge For Dodgers “Pitching Star”, Glasnow

While warming up before a simulated game on Friday, Tyler Glasnow experienced “discomfort” in his right arm, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told the Orange County Register’s Bill Plunkett and other reporters.

Glasnow will undergo tests this weekend to check for any structural issues, and Roberts mentioned, “We’ll re-evaluate and see how he feels over the next few days to determine when he can resume throwing.”

Even if the MRI results are favorable, there is still significant uncertainty about Glasnow’s availability. With the regular season ending in just over two weeks and the Dodgers almost certain to make the playoffs, it remains unclear if Glasnow will be fully recovered and ready to join the postseason roster. The minor league season wraps up next weekend, making a rehab assignment unlikely, so Glasnow would need to rely on simulated games or other preparatory work instead of in-game experience.

Glasnow has been sidelined with elbow tendinitis since August 11, cutting short a strong season in which he posted a 3.49 ERA and an impressive 32.2% strikeout rate over 134 innings. Notably, 109 of those innings came before he was placed on the 15-day IL in early July for lower back soreness. He returned to make four starts before the current elbow issue.

Glasnow’s injury history is extensive. His 134 innings this season already represent a career high in his nine MLB seasons. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021, which cost him nearly all of the 2022 season with the Rays, except for two regular-season games and a playoff appearance. An oblique strain then delayed the start of his 2023 season by two months, but he remained healthy and posted a 3.53 ERA in 120 innings, prompting the Dodgers to acquire him in a major offseason trade and sign him to a $136.5 million extension through the 2028 season.

In the short term, the Dodgers face the possibility of not having Glasnow available for his first postseason with the team. Friday’s development is another setback in a season plagued by pitching injuries, as the Dodgers have had 17 different pitchers make at least one start in 2024.
