‘Devastating’ News Strikes Chiefs: Marquise Brown Hit with Additional Issues

Marquise Brown’s SC joint injury will further delay his debut with the Chiefs, as he is now being placed on injured reserve, according to veteran insider Jordan Schultz.

This decision comes after recent tests revealed that Brown’s injury has not healed as expected. To facilitate proper recovery, the wide receiver will undergo a procedure on Monday. Being placed on injured reserve means he will be out for at least four weeks, having already missed the season opener.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury in mid-August, and while his initial recovery timeline raised concerns about his availability for Week 1, he showed some signs of improvement. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler had noted that Brown did not suffer a broken bone, which sets his situation apart from Tyreek Hill’s similar injury in 2019. Nonetheless, Brown will be out for a significant period.

Previously, Brown had a 1,000-yard season in his final year with the Ravens, but his time in Baltimore was generally underwhelming. After requesting a trade, he spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Despite a drop in his yards-per-reception average to 10.9, he remained a sought-after vertical threat in the free-agent market. The Chiefs signed him to a one-year deal worth $7 million, with an additional $4 million in incentives, though his extended absence will affect his ability to achieve these incentives.

The Chiefs prioritized adding at the receiver position in the offseason, following up Brown’s signing by drafting Xavier Worthy on Day 1. Worthy, who holds the 40-yard dash record, made a strong debut with two touchdowns and is expected to be a key contributor. The team also has Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, Mecole Hardman, and JuJu Smith-Schuster on the roster.

Brown will be out for the next four games until the Chiefs’ bye week, after which he can return. However, activating him from IR will use one of the team’s eight available activations for the season.
