Latest: Yankees Named a Top ‘Landing Spot’ for Projected $210 Million Astros super talent

The New York Yankees are gearing up for their postseason run this October, but general manager Brian Cashman and his team are also likely planning for the 2025 roster during the offseason. One potential addition to the Yankees could be Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.

According to Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, who listed the top 10 destinations for Bregman as he approaches free agency, the Yankees are ranked as the second-best option. The only team ahead of them in the rankings is the Seattle Mariners.

“Though the Astros have never seemed interested in trading Bregman, there have been times when his name has popped up on the rumor mill. And whenever it has, Yankees-related speculation has invariably followed,” he said. “This traces back to the revolving door that the Yankees have had at the hot corner. And while Jazz Chisholm Jr. has put a stop to it for now, one has to assume it’s only temporary.”

Alex Bregman's plan for contract drive? Increase bat speed.

Alex Bregman is wrapping up a five-year, $100 million extension with the Houston Astros in 2024 before entering free agency. With Matt Chapman now secured with the San Francisco Giants, Bregman is expected to be the premier third baseman available this winter.

What kind of contract might the 31-year-old secure? On August 1, Rymer estimated that Bregman could command a seven-year deal worth $210 million.

How Alex Bregman Could Fit in With the Yankees

Given the Yankees’ current infield setup and potential roster changes at season’s end, Bregman could be a strong fit for the team.

As Rymer noted, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been frequently playing third base since his acquisition at the trade deadline. Previously, Chisholm was a second baseman with the Miami Marlins, a position currently held by Gleyber Torres. However, Torres is also approaching free agency this winter. Despite his expressed interest in remaining with the Yankees, his future with the team is uncertain. In 2024, Torres has earned $14.2 million but has struggled with a .250/.328/.362 batting line, 12 home runs, and 55 RBI.

If the Yankees decide not to re-sign Torres, Chisholm could revert to second base. Meanwhile, if DJ LeMahieu remains with the team, he could take over at first base, especially if the Yankees choose not to pick up Anthony Rizzo’s 2025 option.

These adjustments would open up the third base position, making room for Bregman, provided the Yankees can meet his asking price.
