The Cleveland Cavaliers, known for their interest in promising international talent, have made a notable move following the 2024 Paris Olympics. With Kenny Atkinson, who served as an assistant coach for the France national basketball team, now leading the Cavs, it’s not surprising that the team is focusing on global prospects. On Wednesday, the Cavaliers took a significant step by signing an international Olympic standout from South Sudan, who had previously flown under the radar.
Carlik Jones has gained recognition as South Sudan’s top player during the 2023 FIBA World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. However, it was one of his teammates who secured a deal with the Cavaliers. On Wednesday, President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman announced that Cleveland had signed free agent forward JT Thor to a two-way contract, according to NBA.com.
JT Thor, who has spent the past three seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, appeared in 165 games and started 11 of them. The 22-year-old forward has yet to solidify a consistent role in an NBA rotation. Last season, he averaged 3.2 points and 2.3 rebounds on shooting splits of 44/35/55, playing only 12.4 minutes per game for a Hornets team that finished with a dismal 21-61 record.
Thor’s main strength lies in his athleticism, although his offensive game remains quite raw. Cavs fans should temper their expectations, as Thor is likely to spend most of the upcoming season with the team’s G-League affiliate, the Canton Charge.
However, Thor does have potential. He possesses good size and length for a wing player, and his outside shooting is a work in progress. Notably, Thor hit a crucial go-ahead three-pointer for South Sudan in their exhibition game against Team USA, prompting the latter to rely on LeBron James to secure a win.
His experience in the Olympics could significantly aid his development, potentially making him a valuable long-term asset for the Cavaliers.
