A top football recruit, initially committed to East Carolina University (ECU) but announced that he was decommitting and choosing to join the University of Louisville’s football team.
The top talent from Laurens District High School in Laurens, South Carolina, had received his offer from ECU on March 16, marking it as one of three offers he had received up to that point. He was later offered a spot at Louisville on May 12.
Despite his initial commitment to ECU, He continued to explore other options, including visits to Louisville. Besides ECU and Louisville, he also had offers from the University of Akron, Wofford College, and Coastal Carolina University.
Martin shared his decision on Twitter: “But after conversing with my family and coaches, I’ve decided I will be decommitting from East Carolina University!! With that being said, I will be continuing my development as a student-athlete at the University of Louisville!!”
Martin did not provide a specific reason for his change of commitment, but his decision followed shortly after the University of Louisville secured a commitment from kicker Brock Travelston on June 15. Travelston, who is the No. 4 kicker in the 2020 draft class, had received offers from seven schools, including Louisville.
Martin’s decommitment marks the first for ECU head coach Mike Houston and his 2020 recruiting class. Despite this, Coach Houston still has several other verbal commitments, including linebacker Eric Doctor from Florida, and cornerbacks CJ Crump and David Laney, totaling six verbal commitments who may still sign with ECU.
The East Carolinian sought a comment from the ECU Athletic Department, but due to NCAA rules, the department is unable to comment on the commitments or decommitments of players who have not formally signed with the university. Since Martin was only a verbal commit, ECU Athletics is not legally permitted to address the issue.
