Craig Biggio is one of the most iconic players in Houston Astros history, spending all 20 of his seasons with the team and earning a spot in the Hall of Fame.
His son, Cavan Biggio, is also a professional baseball player, though he hasn’t quite reached the same heights as his father. Despite not having achieved the same level of success, Cavan has still had a notable career, bouncing around various teams, which speaks to his value.
This year, Biggio will join his fourth team after being traded from the San Francisco Giants to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night. David O’Brien of The Athletic reported the move.
The Braves, who have been plagued by injuries, acquired Biggio—an infielder and outfielder—in a minor league deal. At 29 years old, Biggio has a .225 career batting average with 51 home runs and a .721 OPS over 520 games and 1,849 plate appearances in six MLB seasons.
Since Biggio was on a minor league contract with the Giants, he was eligible to be traded. However, because the trade occurred after September 1, he won’t be eligible for the postseason with the Braves.
Nevertheless, he might play a key role for Atlanta in the coming weeks as they strive to secure a playoff spot, especially after losing Whit Merrifield to a broken foot and dealing with numerous injuries this season.
In 2024, Biggio has posted a .197/.317/.306 slash line with five home runs, five doubles, and 19 RBIs in 183 major league at-bats. Though he showed promise with 16 home runs in his rookie season, he has faced challenges since then. There is still hope that he can find his stride and maintain a spot on a Major League team moving forward.
