Last month, the team revealed that he had been diagnosed with early-stage arthritis in his left ankle and plans to undergo rehabilitation rather than surgery.
The team explained that this diagnosis is the result of a previous bone fracture from earlier in his career. Krug, now 33, suffered the injury during a preseason game in 2018 while with Boston.
Krug, who was part of the Bruins team that lost to the Blues in the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, signed a seven-year, $45.5 million contract with St. Louis in 2020. The Livonia, Michigan native has accumulated 151 points in 262 games across regular seasons and playoffs since then.
Recently, St. Louis strengthened its defense by adding another left-handed defenseman, Philip Broberg from Edmonton, through an offer sheet that the Oilers did not counter. Broberg, 23, signed a contract worth slightly over $4.58 million annually for the next two years, and the Blues will benefit from cap relief on Krug’s $6.5 million salary by placing him on long-term injured reserve this season.
