On Saturday, the Chicago Cubs added right-handed pitcher to their active roster, a day after claiming him off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Armstrong, who is 3-2 with a 4.85 ERA across 49 games for the Rays and Cardinals this season, has made seven starts and pitched 6⅔ scoreless innings with just three hits allowed in his last seven outings.
Additionally, the Cubs optioned right-hander Daniel Palencia to Triple-A Iowa and released catcher Tomás Nido, who had a .128 batting average in 17 games with Chicago this season.
Armstrong, set to turn 34 on September 11, was drafted by Cleveland in the 18th round of the 2011 amateur draft and made his MLB debut in 2015. Over his career, he has posted an 11-7 record with a 4.13 ERA in 291 major league games, also having played for Cleveland, Seattle, Baltimore, and Miami. He was traded from the Rays to the Cardinals for outfielder Dylan Carlson on July 30.
