BREAKING: Boston Red Sox demote another experienced super talent

On Friday, the Boston Red Sox designated left-hander—who, at 44, is the oldest player in the major leagues—for assignment and called up one of their top pitching prospects, right-hander Luis Guerrero.

He had rejoined his hometown team for a fourth stint after signing a minor league contract with Boston on August 15. He made history by becoming the only active player to have appeared in a major league game over each of the last 20 seasons, achieving this milestone when he pitched in relief during an August 29 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rich Hill, at 44, is back with the Red Sox and wants some postseason energy

Hill’s stint with the Red Sox ended with him having a 0-1 record and a 4.91 ERA, with three walks and five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in four relief appearances.

Throughout his career, Hill has accumulated a 90-74 record with a 4.01 ERA, 543 walks, and 1,428 strikeouts across 1,409 innings and 386 games (248 starts). His career has seen him play for several teams: the Chicago Cubs (2005-08), Baltimore Orioles (2009), Boston Red Sox (2010-12, 2015, 2022, 2024), Cleveland Indians (2013), Los Angeles Angels (2014), New York Yankees (2014), Oakland Athletics (2016), Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-19), Minnesota Twins (2020), Tampa Bay Rays (2021), New York Mets (2021), Pittsburgh Pirates (2023), and San Diego Padres (2023).

Hill’s designation for assignment created a roster spot for 24-year-old Luis Guerrero, who is ranked as the No. 28 prospect in the Boston system by MLB Pipeline.

Guerrero has posted a 3.31 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 42 games for Triple-A Worcester this season, averaging 13.09 strikeouts per nine innings. In his last 10 outings, dating back to August 4, he has recorded a 0.68 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings, having allowed just one run.

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Guerrero moved to Boston as a child and was drafted by the Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
