Just in: mind-blowing news emerge for New York Yankees fans

In August, reports emerged that former New York Yankees announcer  was contemplating a return. According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, the 86-year-old’s comeback to the broadcast booth appears to be imminent.

John Sterling, who was the New York Yankees’ radio voice for 36 years before retiring in April, is making a return to the broadcast booth. The Yankees held a retirement ceremony for Sterling, and this season, Emmanuel Berbari, Justin Shackil, and Rickie Ricardo have been filling in alongside color commentator Suzyn Waldman.

Yankees fans reportedly get return of familiar, iconic voice ahead of playoffs

In August, Sterling mentioned that the decision to return was up to WFAN, stating he would feel for the broadcasters who have covered the games throughout the season. However, Sterling did return to the booth with Waldman in mid-August.

According to Andrew Marchand’s report on Thursday, Sterling will call both home and road games for the Yankees in October, a move that WFAN executives had insisted upon. He is also expected to broadcast some regular-season tune-up games to prepare for the playoffs. Chris Oliviero, WFAN’s boss and Audacy New York president, reportedly offered Sterling this opportunity after receiving approval from top Yankees executives.

Sterling has called five of the Yankees’ record 27 World Series titles, including four in five years (1996, 1998-2000). The Yankees’ most recent championship was in 2009. After the playoffs, Sterling plans to return to retirement.
