BREAKING: Five-star super talent transfer to Texas Tech football

The Texas Tech football program received a boost in recruiting after a challenging month. During that time, several 2025 commits had decommitted and joined other schools, causing the Red Raiders’ recruiting ranking to drop nearly 20 spots nationally.

However, the Red Raiders reversed that trend by securing a commitment from  a 5-star defensive back from Lancaster, Texas.  The top star who had been committed to Washington State for the class of 2025, announced on social media that he has joined Texas Tech after visiting Lubbock over the weekend.

Commit! 2025 DB Braylan McDonald commits to Texas Tech

Standing at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, McDonald is ranked as the No. 128 safety in the nation and the No. 231 overall player in Texas by 247Sports.com. Besides Texas Tech and Washington State, he also had offers from Boston College, UTEP, Bowling Green, and Texas State.

This marks the first commitment for the Red Raiders since July 4. Texas Tech’s 2025 class now consists of 17 players and is ranked No. 43 nationally and No. 8 in the Big 12.

Out of the 17 recruits committed to the Red Raiders, only six are defensive players, and McDonald is just the second safety among them.

Fortunately, the Red Raiders’ current roster is well-stocked at the safety position. Although 2024 starter C.J. Baskerville has just one year of eligibility remaining, the team has several promising young players, including Chapman Lewis, Brenden Jordan, Jordan Sanford, Javeon Wilcox, and Peyton Morgan, all of whom are sophomores or younger.

Given this depth, addressing the safety position isn’t a top priority in this recruiting cycle. Therefore, the decision by Joey McGuire and his staff to allocate a spot in what is expected to be a smaller class to McDonald highlights their strong belief in his potential and future contributions to the team.
