The Washington Commanders are placing significant trust in their rookies for their 2024 offense.
At quarterback, No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels has been entrusted with leading not just the offense but the entire franchise. On the left offensive line, third-round selection Brandon Coleman has secured the role of protecting Daniels’ blind side, having edged out veteran Cornelius Lucas for the position.
Wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, also a third-round pick, will be starting and will face heightened expectations following the trade of former first-round pick Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder suggests that the Commanders could benefit from adding some experienced talent by signing free agent offensive tackle and two-time Super Bowl champion Donovan Smith.
Holder noted, “With rookie third-round pick Brandon Coleman starting at left tackle, Washington has some uncertainties in their offensive line. While Coleman might develop into a reliable protector, bringing in a seasoned veteran like Smith would be a prudent move to ensure Jayden Daniels’ protection. Smith, a 10-year veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion, could provide crucial experience and mentorship, even if he is not on the field.”
Smith was a key starter on the Super Bowl-winning teams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023.
