The Rangers’ veteran pitcher, battling right shoulder fatigue, has made just eight starts in 2024. Despite posting a solid 3.89 ERA in those outings, he probably anticipates performing at a higher level. Consistency has been elusive due to ongoing injury issues.
Injuries have been a recurring issue for Scherzer throughout his career, as he hasn’t made 30 or more starts in a season since 2021, the same year he last appeared in an All-Star game. His durability concerns have sparked speculation in the MLB community about whether the 40-year-old might retire after the 2024 season. Despite this, Scherzer appears eager to continue pitching in 2025, hoping for a healthier and more successful season. For now, his priority is returning to the Rangers’ rotation before the current season concludes.
The Rangers’ chances of clinching the American League West are very slim, as they trail the Houston Astros by 10 games. Their prospects for an AL Wild Card spot are similarly bleak, with Texas 9.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the final Wild Card position.
To mount a serious playoff push, the Rangers would need one of the most impressive Septembers in recent history. While it’s not entirely out of the question, it’s certainly unlikely. Scherzer’s return could potentially help Texas regain momentum and improve their chances.
