Latest: Kirby Smart Fires Back at Critics of Georgia’s Culture

Top-ranked Georgia has kicked off the 2024 college football season with a decisive 34-3 victory over No. 14 Clemson. Despite missing several key players, including starting running back Trevor Etienne—who was suspended for the game following a summer arrest—the Bulldogs performed exceptionally well. Etienne’s suspension is part of a larger pattern of more than 20 driving-related arrests involving Georgia players since January 2023, which has sparked significant criticism regarding the team culture under head coach Kirby Smart.

Despite external criticism of Georgia’s program, head coach Kirby Smart contends that this criticism doesn’t reflect the true nature of the team’s culture. Smart addressed the negative discourse, particularly from rival programs aiming to impact Georgia’s recruiting efforts. He asserted, “I wish you could talk to our players. What’s known internally is far more accurate than the negative portrayals from outside. People use it against us in recruiting, but it often backfires on them.”

Georgia’s recruiting success continues unabated, highlighted by the signing of the No. 1 overall class for the 2024 cycle. Despite ongoing concerns about driving-related issues in Athens, the program has maintained its strong performance and unity, remaining one of the premier college football teams. Georgia will return to Sanford Stadium for its home opener against Tennessee Tech on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
