Alec Bohm missed his third consecutive game on Sunday night as the Phillies wrapped up their season series against the Braves. Despite this, manager Rob Thomson reported that Bohm is making progress.
Bohm injured his left hand during an awkward swing against Charlie Morton in the first inning of Thursday’s game. He attempted to continue playing but was pulled from the game an inning later. Over the weekend, he has experienced inflammation and swelling in the hand, but X-rays revealed no structural damage.
Thomson is optimistic that Bohm will not need to be placed on the injured list.
“His grip strength is improving,” Thomson said. “The pain is lessening, but he’s not ready to swing a bat just yet.”
Bohm did some stretching and running on the outfield grass with a trainer on Sunday afternoon. The team hopes he will be back in the lineup by Tuesday for the start of their six-game road trip, which begins with two games in Toronto followed by four in Miami. He has not been available to pinch-hit over the weekend and is expected to remain out for Sunday’s game to allow for an additional 48 hours of recovery.
In the series finale against Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach, Edmundo Sosa started at third base. The Phillies had called up left-handed-hitting Kody Clemens earlier in the day as rosters expanded from 26 to 28, but Thomson was impressed with Sosa’s performance on Saturday night, during which he hit a 450-foot home run and a double in a 3-0 victory.
