The Detroit Lions are relatively unseasoned at wide receiver on their 53-man roster but have significant experience in the position on their practice squad.
On Wednesday, the Lions added veteran receivers Tim Patrick and Allen Robinson to their practice squad, bringing more experience to the position.
The Lions have only four receivers on their 53-man roster: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Kalif Raymond, and Isaiah Williams. Together, they have 489 career receptions, with St. Brown contributing 315 of those catches, nearly 65% of the total.
Patrick, 30, and Robinson, 31, have combined for 705 career catches. The Lions were seeking a large-bodied receiver and signed both players on Wednesday.
Patrick, standing 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 212 pounds, has missed the past two seasons due to ACL and Achilles tendon injuries. Robinson is 6-2 and 210 pounds. Both players are known for their ability to make contested catches.
In 2021, Patrick set a career-high with 53 catches for 734 yards. He has mostly been with the Denver Broncos since signing as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017.
Robinson, who hails from Detroit and attended Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, has had four seasons with at least 70 receptions. Last season, he caught 34 passes for 280 yards with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has previously played for the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
In addition, the Lions signed veteran receiver Tom Kennedy and quarterback Jake Fromm to the practice squad on Wednesday, along with 11 other players from training camp. They have one remaining open practice squad spot, which ESPN reports will likely be filled by veteran receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, who was also with the team during training camp.
