The Detroit Red Wings have signed veteran forward to a professional tryout contract (PTO) for the 2024–25 NHL season, as announced by WD Sports & Entertainment on August 28. The 32-year-old, a native of Michigan, will attempt to secure a roster spot with his hometown team after spending last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Watson will need to prove himself during the preseason to earn a place on the NHL roster.
Drafted 18th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2010 NHL Draft, Watson has accumulated 515 games of NHL experience with the Predators, Ottawa Senators, and Lightning. Over his career, he has scored 60 goals, totaled 118 points, and accumulated 705 penalty minutes. Last season, he played 33 games with the Lightning, recording 4 points and 93 penalty minutes. Before that, he spent three seasons with the Senators, where he played 75 games in the 2022–23 season, scoring nine goals and 11 points—his highest single-season games played total since 2017–18.
