On Monday, the Rams held their first practice at their new temporary facility in Woodland Hills, but linebacker Ernest Jones IV was absent. As a team captain and the top tackler from last season, Jones is in the final year of his rookie contract. The Rams prefer he complete this contract before discussing an extension.
On Sunday, the Rams granted permission for Jones’ representatives to seek a trade and a new contract with other teams. Following this, Jones tweeted that he hadn’t requested a trade, but quickly deleted the post.
Coach Sean McVay confirmed that Jones did not ask for a trade, noting that while there have been discussions with his representatives and other teams, the situation is still ongoing.
With star defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s retirement, Jones was anticipated to be a key figure in the defense under new coordinator Chris Shula. McVay praised Jones as a consummate professional but acknowledged the possibility of parting ways.
The Rams have to finalize their 53-man roster by Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT, and other inside linebackers like Christian Rozeboom, Jacob Hummel, Troy Reeder, and rookie Omar Speights are vying for spots.
Regarding how they would manage Jones’ potential departure before their season opener against Detroit on September 8, McVay indicated that the team would assess their options once the situation is resolved, although he didn’t provide a specific timeline.
In other updates, McVay did not detail why left tackle Alaric Jackson is suspended for two games due to a personal conduct policy violation. Jackson was seen participating in individual drills but did not join the full practice. Quarterback Stetson Bennett was missing due to a family issue but is expected back on Wednesday. Receiver Puka Nacua (knee), left guard Jonah Jackson (shoulder), and cornerback Darious Williams (hamstring) were involved in individual drills. McVay mentioned that right tackle Rob Havenstein (ankle) might be available for the opener but could also miss it, leaving Joe Noteboom and Warren McClendon Jr. as potential replacements.
