On Thursday, Creed Humphrey set a new record as the highest-paid center in NFL history, finalizing a four-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs worth $72 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The agreement includes $50 million in guaranteed money.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised Humphrey’s performance after their 34-21 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears, saying, “He’s an exceptional football player, a top-notch player. He started strong and has maintained that level of play. We value everything he does and are glad to have him here.”
Humphrey, who did not address the media post-game, was drafted by the Chiefs in the second round in 2021 from Oklahoma and quickly earned a starting role. Known for his solid pass protection, he ranked second among NFL interior offensive linemen in pass block win rate last season at 98.8%, just behind his teammate, guard Joe Thuney.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach expressed enthusiasm about extending Humphrey’s tenure, stating, “We’re thrilled to keep Creed here. He’s been a tremendous asset to our team, and we’re hopeful to achieve similar success with our other young players.”
The Chiefs’ other starting guard, Trey Smith, who was drafted alongside Humphrey, is in the final year of his contract. Smith ranked third in the NFL for pass block win rate at 96.6%.
