The Iowa Hawkeyes will be missing two coaches when they face off against Illinois State at Duke Slater Field in Kinnick Stadium on August 31. On Wednesday night, multiple sources informed 247Sports that Iowa’s head coach Kirk Ferentz and wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr will be suspended for the season opener due to a recruiting violation.
The suspension is connected to the recruitment of current starting quarterback Cade McNamara. According to 247Sports, the sanction is linked to an NCAA investigation, but it remains unclear whether it is being enforced by Iowa or the NCAA. In addition, starting wide receiver Kaleb Brown will also be absent for the game.
Earlier this summer, Iowa self-reported a level-III rules violation involving current Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor.
Ferentz, the longest-serving coach in college football, is beginning his 26th season with Iowa. With a record of 196-119, he is the all-time winningest coach in Iowa’s history and ranks third in the Big Ten Conference. Last season, Iowa ended with a 10-4 record, winning the Big Ten West before losing to Michigan 26-0 in the Big Ten Championship game.
