The contract, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, includes $65.8 million in guaranteed money, making Terrell the second-highest-paid cornerback in the league on a per-year basis at $20.25 million, only behind Green Bay Packers’ Jaire Alexander.
Terrell, who was scheduled to play under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, had dismissed concerns about his future in Atlanta during training camp last month.
When asked about the ongoing contract negotiations, Terrell said, “It’s easy for me to come out, go to work, and not worry about it because I know it’s being handled well.”
Drafted by the Falcons with the 16th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Terrell has become one of the league’s top cover corners. His ability to cover elite receivers has been crucial for Atlanta’s defense, earning him a second-team All-Pro honor in 2021.
During his four seasons with the Falcons, Terrell has tallied 247 tackles, 43 passes defensed, four interceptions, and one sack. Although his recent seasons have seen fewer interceptions, his on-field impact remains significant.
This contract extension is part of the Falcons’ broader rebuilding strategy. Recently, the team has made several moves to strengthen their defense, including acquiring four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon and signing safety Justin Simmons. With Terrell and Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates III already in the mix, the Falcons’ secondary is shaping up to be one of the league’s strongest.
As the team prepares for the new season under defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, securing Terrell’s future helps ensure that Atlanta’s defense will continue to be a formidable force in the NFC South.
