The Tampa Bay Rays called up their No. 2 prospect, Caminero, from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday. In the Rays’ 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros, Caminero managed an infield hit but struck out three times.
“I felt really good,” Caminero said through an interpreter. “I focused hard, and I think that was the most important thing.”
Caminero, who played in seven games for the Rays last season, made a few notable defensive plays at third base in the recent game.
At 21, Caminero hit .276 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs in 53 games with Durham this season, although he has been sidelined twice due to quadriceps injuries.
Before the season, ESPN ranked Caminero as the No. 3 prospect in their Top 100 list, following a minor league season where he batted .324 with 31 home runs. He was behind only Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers and Jackson Holliday of the Baltimore Orioles, both of whom are currently in the majors.
In related news, Curtis Mead was sent back to Durham to free up a spot on the Rays’ roster. Mead was hitting .238 with one home run and seven RBIs.
