Blockbuster Trade Proposal Has Maple Leafs Acquiring 23-year-old super talent

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has indicated that the team is willing to explore trade options, and one proposed trade involves them acquiring a talented young forward.

The site PuckPedia has introduced a new feature called PuckGM, which allows users to suggest their own trades. One user has put forward a trade idea where the Maple Leafs would receive Kaapo Kakko from the New York Rangers.

Maple Leafs get:

Kaapo Kakko

Rangers get:

Nick Robertson
2026 third-round pick

The proposed trade involves a swap of unhappy forwards between Toronto and New York, with the Maple Leafs also adding a third-round pick to the deal.

Kaapo Kakko, who was picked second overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, has had difficulty meeting expectations. He signed a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the Rangers but was a healthy scratch both during the regular season and the playoffs. Last season, Kakko played 61 games, scoring 13 goals and 6 assists for a total of 19 points. Over his career, he has appeared in 300 NHL games, tallying 57 goals and 60 assists for 117 points.

On the other hand, Nick Robertson, selected in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, is a restricted free agent who has also expressed frustration with his role. He has informed the Maple Leafs of his desire for a trade and his intention not to re-sign. Robertson played 56 games last season, notching 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points.

A new beginning for both Kakko and Robertson might be just what they need to establish themselves as genuine NHL players.
