Bengals Abruptly Cut Ties With Top Talent
The Cincinnati Bengals shocked the NFL on Wednesday, abruptly releasing WR the player who has defined the team’s offense since 2021.
No trade. No extension talks that led anywhere. Just a one-paragraph team statement and the face of the franchise on the waiver wire.
The Bengals cited “contract structure and long-term roster sustainability” for the move. Chase, 26, was entering the final year of his 5th-year option and was seeking a deal that would have made him the highest-paid WR in football.
A franchise cornerstone, gone
From the moment he was drafted 5th overall, Chase and Joe Burrow were inseparable. LSU to Cincinnati, and then to the AFC Championship Game as rookies.

“We love Ja’Marr. He’s a generational talent and a huge part of what we built here,” head coach Zac Taylor said. “This was about giving us flexibility to keep this window open for Burrow for the next decade.”
Burrow posted on X within an hour: “Brother for life. 1. Appreciate you.” Tee Higgins also posted a heartbreak emoji.
Why Cincinnati did it
This is a cap and leverage decision. The Bengals have Burrow’s contract, and extensions for Higgins, and OL are all on the docket. Chase was projected to reset the WR market at $35M+ AAV.
Front office exec Duke Tobin chose financial flexibility over keeping the Burrow-Chase duo intact. The bet: you can find WR production cheaper, you can’t find franchise QBs.
It’s a massive gamble in the AFC. Baltimore, Buffalo, and Kansas City aren’t getting worse. And you just made your QB’s job harder.
What’s next
Chase will have 31 suitors by Friday. Teams like the Patriots, Panthers, and Bears with cap space and young QBs are already circling. Expect him to sign the richest WR contract in history within 10 days.
For Cincinnati, the message is stark: the Super Bowl window is still open, but it just got narrower. You don’t replace Ja’Marr Chase. You hope scheme and draft picks can cover 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns.
The Bengals made the coldest business decision of the offseason. Now they have to prove it was the right one.
