Iowa football coach will be out for the Hawkeyes’ season opener due to a recruiting violation. Wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr will also face a one-game suspension.
Reports from The Athletic, ESPN, and 247Sports, which came out late Wednesday, indicate that the suspensions are connected to the recruitment of transfer quarterback Cade McNamara.
The Hawkeyes are set to host Illinois State in their season opener at noon EDT on August 31 in Iowa City.
Kirk Ferentz, who is 69 years old and the longest-tenured coach in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision with a 196-119 record over 25 seasons, will be suspended for this game due to a recruiting violation. Last season, the Hawkeyes went 10-4 but lost to Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl.
Cade McNamara, who began his career at Michigan and committed to Iowa on December 1, 2022, was the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes last season. He completed 46 of 90 passes (51.1%) for 505 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions in five games. Deacon Hill, another quarterback for the Hawkeyes, threw 122 completions on 251 attempts (48.6%) for 1,152 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions over 13 games before transferring to Utah Tech this offseason. McNamara is now competing with Brendan Sullivan, who transferred from Northwestern in May, for the starting position this year.
