The latest Braves trade continues the theme of either reducing costs or strengthening organizational depth. According to an announcement from the team, Atlanta has reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire pitcher in exchange for Mitch Farris.
Farris, a 14th-round selection in the 2023 draft, has pitched 124.2 innings since joining the Braves. He’s made 21 starts and appeared in nine games out of the bullpen, posting a 2.96 ERA, a 30% strikeout rate, and a 9.7% walk rate, most of which came at the High-A level.
The 28-year-old has limited major league experience. Over the past two seasons, he pitched 42.2 innings for the Angels with a 5.06 ERA. However, the Braves must have seen something promising in his Triple-A performance. In 21 starts, he threw 118 innings with a 5.42 ERA. While his numbers aren’t particularly impressive for someone his age at Triple-A, he struck out 23.3% of batters faced and allowed just a 6.5% walk rate. His 4.41 FIP suggests his ERA may have been skewed by factors outside of his control.
This trade doesn’t move the needle much, but it reflects the Braves’ ongoing efforts to build depth in the organization. Given the injuries that plagued Atlanta’s roster this past season, depth remains crucial, and general manager Alex Anthopoulos is well aware of that need.
While the Braves still need to strengthen their outfield, rotation, and bullpen, fans are growing increasingly impatient as the offseason progresses. It’s understandable, but I’d be surprised if Anthopoulos doesn’t have some more moves lined up, including possibly another trade.
