The 7-footer could soon be headed to Lexington through the transfer portal.
That’s the latest projection from the 247Sports Crystal Ball as the portal opens Tuesday, with predictions pointing to Gwath transferring from San Diego State to Kentucky.
If it materializes, it could be a major addition for the Wildcats and head coach Mark Pope.
Gwath, born in the United States to South Sudanese refugee parents, played high school basketball in both Texas and California before joining SDSU.
After redshirting his first year, he earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors in the 2024–25 season.
He followed that up with another impressive year for the Aztecs before entering the transfer portal.
Statistically, his 2024–25 campaign was slightly stronger, averaging 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game.
This past season, he posted 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.
What makes him especially intriguing is his versatility—he shows flashes of perimeter play, shooting 40.7% from three in his college career, including an impressive 43.5% in 2025–26.
If Kentucky lands him, they’d be getting a player who can both protect the rim and stretch the floor, making him a high-upside addition.
Naturally, Wildcats fans will be hoping the prediction proves accurate.
