The Kentucky Wildcats are expected to part ways with a promising guard ahead of next season.
Jasper Johnson has decided to explore opportunities in the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. He became part of the rotation toward the end of the season under head coach Mark Pope, though his playing time in the postseason remained limited.
Johnson was the top recruit brought in during Pope’s tenure, ranked No. 24 nationally by 247Sports. He was also listed as the fifth-best shooting guard and the third-best prospect out of Georgia in his class. Given his natural scoring talent, he is likely to attract strong interest from other programs.
While Johnson showed clear potential, his efficiency on the court left room for improvement. His limited role in the postseason—logging just eight total minutes across Kentucky’s two NCAA Tournament games—may have contributed to his decision to move on.

More details on his choice were shared in a report by Jonathan Givony.
The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 4.9 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 40% from the field and 34.1% from downtown with an effective field goal percentage of 50.3%. His best performance came in a 36-point over North Carolina Central in which he dropped 22 points.
Johnson’s exodus is going to be another obstacle for Pope and company, who need to figure out how to keep and also attract talent to Lexington for this next season. It could also point to a larger issue in which BBN didn’t seem too fond of Johnson, and that also might have played a part in his decision to look elsewhere.
