At his introductory press conference on Sunday night, Scott Frost held up a No. 10 jersey to mark his appointment as the 10th head football coach in UCF history. He then lightened the mood by joking, “Well, 10’s not my number. Maybe we know somebody else who could use that.”
As it turns out, UCF’s most famous No. 10 is indeed returning to the Bounce House. The starting quarterback of the Knights’ undefeated 2017 team, will come back as the team’s quarterbacks coach, Frost announced on Tuesday. Milton, 27, had spent the last two seasons at Tennessee, where he worked as an offensive analyst on Josh Heupel’s staff, helping the Volunteers reach the College Football Playoff.
“I’m beyond excited to be back in Orlando and part of the UCF family once again,” Milton said in a statement released by the university. “UCF holds such a special place in my heart, and to return as quarterbacks coach is truly an honor. I couldn’t be more excited to work alongside Coach Frost, who has been such a pivotal figure in my career.”
Milton, originally from Kapolei, Hawaii, ranks third in UCF program history with 9,761 yards of total offense. Over his three seasons as the starting quarterback (2016-2018), he was responsible for 92 touchdowns and finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting during his junior year.
UCF posted a 27-6 record with Milton as the starting quarterback. His career with the Knights came to a heartbreaking end after a severe right leg injury in the regular-season finale against South Florida. However, Milton made a remarkable return to football in 2021 after transferring to Florida State, where he played in six games and won the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year award.
Milton will now take over the role of quarterbacks coach from fellow UCF alumnus Darin Hinshaw, who served as the quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons under head coach Gus Malzahn, as well as the offensive coordinator during the 2023 season.
