Grosz ranks as Colorado’s No. 20 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and spent the entire 2025 season pitching at the High-A level across the Yankees’ and Rockies’ systems. McCarthy, meanwhile, is coming off a difficult 2025 campaign. Following the move, Arizona’s 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.

Diamondbacks Move McCarthy to Colorado

McCarthy’s five-year MLB tenure with Arizona has been marked by inconsistency. He earned some National League Rookie of the Year consideration in 2022 but regressed in 2023. He rebounded strongly in 2024, batting .285/.349/.400 with eight home runs over 142 games, only to struggle again in 2025 with a .204/.247/.345 line.

Known for his speed and dependable outfield defense, McCarthy has had trouble sustaining offensive production. Even so, he played an important role on Diamondbacks teams that returned to competitiveness in 2022 and 2023.

Arizona Adds Pitching Prospect Josh Grosz

In exchange, the Diamondbacks acquire Grosz, a right-handed starter with developmental upside. His 2025 numbers were modest, as he posted a 4.67 ERA across 22 starts at High-A, striking out 135 batters over 125.1 innings. Drafted out of college by the Yankees in 2023, Grosz remains a work in progress.

MLB Pipeline notes that Grosz has increased his fastball velocity to the 93–95 mph range, touching 98, with strong spin and riding action. His slider and changeup show promise, though his control remains inconsistent. At 6-foot-4, he projects as a potential back-end rotation arm or multi-inning reliever.

Arizona has not yet made major additions to its big-league roster beyond signing Michael Soroka and Merrill Kelly. The club still has needs in the bullpen and lineup, but for now, this trade opens a 40-man roster spot while bringing in a young pitcher with upside.
