Heading into a crucial game against Virginia on Saturday night at Lane Stadium, the Virginia Tech football team is dealing with several injuries. To make matters worse, they are facing uncertainty at a key position, with the situation still unresolved leading up to kickoff.
On Tuesday, Coach Pry stated that both quarterbacks, Kyron Drones and Collin Schlee, were once again listed as questionable for the game against the Cavaliers. However, the released depth chart showed Drones as the starter and Schlee as the backup. It remains uncertain whether this will be the actual lineup come game time.
Drones missed the game against Syracuse on November 2, but returned to play the following week against Clemson, although he was clearly not fully healthy. After the bye week on November 16, he did not dress for the game against Duke last Saturday, in which the Hokies lost 31-28. Schlee started in his place but was injured at the end of the first quarter against the Blue Devils and did not return. He was replaced by Pop Watson for the remainder of the game.
“I don’t have the answer to that right now,” said Pry. “They are both questionable. I’d say Schlee is a little further along.”
Based on those comments, it wouldn’t be surprising to see either quarterback starting against the Cavaliers. It seems like there will be plenty of waiting and observing as Watson and Davi Belfort take reps with the first and second teams.

Given these remarks, it wouldn’t be surprising to see either quarterback starting against the Cavaliers. It seems there will be a lot of waiting and watching as Watson and Davi Belfort take reps with the first and second teams.
“Obviously, right now, he’ll (Watson) get the reps with the 1s in practice today,” Pry said. “Pop getting these significant snaps with the starting group is going to help him. He repped a bunch last week with the 2nd group. The other guy getting some attention in practice is Davi. Right now we have four quarterbacks we’re trying to get ready to play.”
Watson did impress in the final three quarters against Duke, stepping up and making some key throws. While he did make some mistakes, as expected, he still gave Virginia Tech a chance to win in the end. His performance showed promise, even in a difficult loss.
