It seems like a logical move, especially if they can secure a player on a budget-friendly deal.
Despite a challenging 2024 season, Toronto is not far off from being competitive. The Blue Jays won 89 games in 2023 and return with much of that same roster for 2025. Adding a bit more offensive firepower could help them return to that level of success.
With that in mind, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson mentioned New York Mets slugger J.D. Martinez as a potential free-agent target for Toronto.
Anderson noted, “The short version: Aging power hitter might be nearing the end.” He pointed out that concerns about Martinez’s decline were raised last offseason, and those issues have continued. Martinez finished with a 106 OPS+ in 2024, his lowest mark in a full season since 2013, before he broke out with the Tigers. His strong hitting was limited to May and June, and he actually struck out more in the second half (63 times) than he reached base (61).
Martinez also struggled against right-handed pitchers, particularly with a 42% strikeout rate on breaking balls. While it’s not surprising to see a 37-year-old showing signs of decline, it’s concerning when his value is primarily tied to his bat. Anderson speculated that Martinez will likely find a spot on an Opening Day roster, but further decline could make it difficult for him to maintain a full-time role throughout the season. Potential suitors include the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers.
Martinez is expected to sign a one-year, $9.5 million deal—could that be with Toronto?
