The Las Vegas Raiders’ offense is still facing challenges, largely due to underwhelming quarterback performance. The team plans to take a proactive approach in seeking a quarterback during the offseason, ensuring they create the right environment for success.
After trading Davante Adams, the Raiders’ wide receiver group is quite limited. They will need to focus on strengthening this position, potentially targeting a top veteran. Alex Ballentine from Bleacher Report suggests that the team should pursue Chris Godwin, the wide receiver from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“The Raiders’ decision to trade Davante Adams was probably the right one, but it leaves a massive hole in the Raiders offense,” Ballentine wrote in an October 28 column. “Replacing Adams is more than a one-man job, but whoever is playing quarterback for the Silver and Black next year is going to need help. Preferably, some of that help will come from a proven veteran.
“Chris Godwin’s future in Tampa Bay could be murky with Godwin suffering an ankle injury that ended his season. He was having a strong season before the injury, but he’ll be 29 this offseason and is looking for a new contract. He would be an ideal candidate for the Raiders to bring in and anchor the receiving corps for a new quarterback.”
Raiders Can’t Pay Too Much for Chris Godwin
Before his season-ending ankle injury, Chris Godwin was enjoying a strong season, recording 576 receiving yards and five touchdowns in just seven games. However, this marks the second time since 2021 that he has faced a season-ending injury.
As he approaches his 29th birthday in February, Godwin remains a talented player who has shown he can recover from injuries. Nonetheless, it’s difficult to envision any team other than Tampa Bay willing to offer him a significant contract after this latest ankle setback.
The Raiders should prioritize youth and avoid overpaying for an older wide receiver. However, if the price is reasonable, Chris Godwin could be a strong fit. A veteran receiver with the ability to create separation would greatly benefit a young quarterback. If Godwin’s contract is around $10 million per season, he could be a worthwhile option for the Raiders to consider.
Raiders Could Go After WRs in Draft
Currently, Jakobi Meyers is the Raiders’ top wide receiver and is under contract for next season. Beyond him, the depth at the position is quite lacking. Tre Tucker has shown potential but seems more suited as a No. 3 receiver.
While Meyers can perform well as a No. 1 receiver, he may be more effective in a No. 2 role. The Raiders will eventually seek a true star wide receiver, and they could make significant investments in their offense during the 2025 NFL Draft.
Quarterback is clearly the top priority for the Raiders, but wide receiver is also a significant need. If they don’t have to trade up for a quarterback, they’ll have ample draft capital to utilize. Although the defense requires improvement, the offense is in disarray. General manager Tom Telesco might focus on using early draft picks to strengthen the wide receiver, offensive line, and running back positions once he secures a quarterback.
