The Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger left Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reported that Harper sustained a bruised left elbow and will undergo further evaluation.
The injury occurred during Harper’s first at-bat of the game. He had previously mentioned dealing with some elbow issues this season, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson stated that Harper was “fine” and didn’t need any rest prior to the game.
Zolecki noted that the elbow Harper injured is not the same one that had been causing him problems earlier. The Phillies will hope that his departure from the game won’t worsen any of his existing injuries.
Currently, Harper is hitting .282/.371/.521 with 26 home runs and 76 RBIs in 2024, contributing to the Phillies’ strong 82-56 record, which places them in first place in the NL East.
Ensuring Harper stays healthy for the postseason should be a priority for the team, so they’ll need to confirm his readiness before he returns to play.
