The Washington Nationals are entering a crucial offseason as they aim to move past their rebuilding phase. In 2024, they achieved 71 wins for the second consecutive year, largely thanks to a wealth of young talent, signaling a promising future for the franchise.
This offseason, the Nationals will see several contracts expire, most notably that of Patrick Corbin, whose signing has been underwhelming. With his hefty salary off the books, the team will have financial flexibility to invest in new areas to strengthen the roster.
However, the team’s direction remains uncertain. General manager Mike Rizzo may choose to hold off on pursuing top free agents for another year, given the youthful and unpredictable nature of the current lineup.
Washington’s offseason could unfold in various ways: they might aggressively seek reinforcements, or they could opt for patience. If Rizzo leans toward the latter, trading veteran closer Kyle Finnegan could be a logical move, even though he has served as the team’s closer. Recently, Finnegan has been mentioned as a trade candidate for the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report.
Finnegan had a standout 2024 season, earning his first All-Star selection with a 3.68 ERA, 38 saves, and 60 strikeouts over 63.1 innings. Should he become available, the Blue Jays would be a fitting match, as they have a strong roster and significant financial resources despite a disappointing season in 2024.
Strengthening their bullpen would address several of Toronto’s issues, as that unit struggled last year. Although Finnegan has been a reliable closer for the Nationals, he could adapt to a setup role on a contending team.
As the Blue Jays aim to compete in the tough American League East, bolstering their relief pitching will be crucial, making Finnegan an appealing target if he becomes available this winter.
