The Blue Jays don’t appear overly concerned about signing Vladimir Guerrero to an extension, based on general manager Ross Atkins’ comments during the end-of-year press conference. Trade discussions between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays regarding Guerrero are intensifying, especially since he’s entering the final year of his contract in 2025 and no extension has been announced yet.
While fans would be unhappy to see Guerrero depart, failing to secure anything in return if he’s not re-signed for 2026 would be a significant error. As Miller noted, with one season of arbitration eligibility left before hitting free agency, Guerrero could replicate the success of players like Aaron Judge in 2022 or Juan Soto this year, having a standout walk year with the Yankees before landing a major contract.
There’s speculation about a potential trade that would send Guerrero to the Yankees in exchange for outfielder Spencer Jones, left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge, and right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter. In this scenario, the Blue Jays would acquire two of the Yankees’ top ten prospects, with Jones ranked second and Selvidge seventh, while Beeter just completed an impressive year in Triple-A with a 2.25 ERA and pitched three games in the majors with a 4.91 ERA.
Fans may be reluctant to accept Guerrero’s departure, but they might need to consider it if Atkins doesn’t secure a deal soon.
