On Wednesday afternoon, Coquese Washington, head coach of Rutgers women’s basketball, revealed that walk-on star has joined the roster for the 2024-25 season.
“We are super excited to round out our roster with another vital addition,” Washington said. “In the short time that she has been with us, she has leaned into the values that make our team click. She is a hard worker, an excellent thinker, and, most importantly, a great teammate.”
Before joining Rutgers, Deja Young was a walk-on for the Hampton women’s basketball team from fall 2022 to spring 2023, contributing to the team’s 12 victories, including nine in conference play.

She also helped her team advance to the North Jersey Section 1, Group 3 Quarterfinals.
In her senior season, Young averaged 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.7 steals per game. Off the court, she was recognized for her academic achievements as a member of the National Honor Society and the Principal’s Honor Roll.
