The Los Angeles Rams have announced the release of 28-year-old just over a month after signing him. He was brought on board on September 11, the same day the team announced guard Steve Avila and swing lineman Joseph Noteboom would be placed on Injured Reserve. Christian was only active during the Week 2 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, where he didn’t participate in offensive plays and was on the field for just two special teams snaps.
Drafted in the third round by the Washington Commanders in 2018, he played in two games as a rookie before suffering a knee injury. He started at left tackle in his second year but faced another knee setback. Following that season, he was released and subsequently played for five different teams: the Houston Texans (twice), Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans before joining the Rams.
As for who might take his spot on the active roster, there are a couple of options. First, Joseph Noteboom may be nearing a return from his high ankle sprain, as reports indicate he’s back at Rams practice and working on the side. Depending on his recovery, he could be designated for return from IR.
Another possibility is receiver/returner Xavier Smith being added to the roster. Smith has been elevated from the practice squad three times, and with a limit of four, a decision on his status is forthcoming. Given that he has been named the primary kick returner moving forward, now could be the ideal time to promote him.
Choosing between Noteboom and Smith comes down to weighing experience against potential. Noteboom, while a career backup with a history of injuries, offers familiarity with the Rams’ system and the ability to step into a starting role if needed. However, his injury track record and questions about his consistency might raise concerns about reliability.
On the other hand, Smith, a second-year undrafted free agent, brings speed and agility that could enhance both the return game and the offense. His fresh legs and dynamic playmaking ability could inject some excitement into the team, but he lacks the proven track record that Noteboom has.
Ultimately, the decision hinges on the Rams’ immediate needs—do they prioritize the stability and experience of a known player, or do they take a chance on a young player with potential to make an impact? Each option has its merits and risks.
