In the weeks leading up to his commitment, all indications suggested that North Carolina State would land four-star wide receiver when he made his decision on Friday. Anna Adams of 247Sports was on the verge of making a Crystal Ball prediction for the Wolfpack but refrained on Thursday after sensing that Virginia Tech was gaining momentum.
Adams’s intuition proved correct. Peterkin announced on Friday morning that he was committing to the Hokies, adding another talented wide receiver to their Class of 2025 and securing a major recruiting win for Fontel Mines.
Snook Peterkin commits to Virginia Tech over two in-state ACC schools
Along with North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina were also in the mix for Shamarius “Snook” Peterkin. The 6-foot-2, 172-pound standout from Winston-Salem, N.C., visited Blacksburg on May 31 before touring NC State and North Carolina. Peterkin, a key player at Mount Tabor High School, received nearly two dozen offers.
Peterkin becomes the fourth four-star recruit in Virginia Tech’s Class of 2025, joining linebacker Brett Clatterbaugh and fellow wide receivers Micah Matthews and Matthew Outten. Last season, Peterkin had a stellar junior year, catching 42 passes for 842 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is the second commit from North Carolina in this class, joining edge rusher Sherrod Henderson.
Fontel Mines has been instrumental for head coach Brent Pry in recruiting, leading the efforts for both Micah Matthews and Matthew Outten as well. Virginia Tech is assembling a strong Class of 2025 and building an exciting wide receiver group for the future. Not long ago, it seemed unlikely that Peterkin would choose the Hokies, but Mines’s efforts have significantly contributed to assembling one of the more impressive recruiting classes in recent memory for Virginia Tech.
