The Quebec native chance to return to the Detroit Red Wings came to an end he was released from his professional tryout contract.
The 34-year-old forward did not play last season due to hip surgery he underwent in January.
“I wasn’t sure where my career was headed,” said the Quebec native. “I thought that might be the end for me. Hockey was physically challenging, and life in general was tough. Things at home weren’t great either. After going through it all, I ended up having surgery in January.”
Chiasson opted to try out for the Red Wings because he appreciated the organization and its people. During the 2022-23 season, he played for both the Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins, scoring six goals in 20 games for Detroit.
Ultimately, there wasn’t space for veteran Alex Chiasson on the team, as the roster is nearly finalized barring any injuries.
It remains uncertain whether Chiasson will consider retirement or seek an opportunity with another NHL team.
In another move, the Red Wings have returned signed draft pick Emmitt Finnie to the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League. At 19, he isn’t eligible to play for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Finnie was selected in the seventh round of the 2023 draft.
As the Red Wings head into Thursday’s game against the Maple Leafs at Little Caesars, they still have 55 players in their training camp roster, including 31 forwards, 16 defensemen, and eight goaltenders.
