Latest: Proposed Trade Sends Cowboys $100 Million 5-Time Pro Bowl Playmaker

Few teams know Cleveland Browns star receiver as well as the Dallas Cowboys do. Now, there are rumors that he could be a trade candidate. Could the Cowboys consider bringing him back?

Although the relationship ended on a rocky note, Dallas is in need of roster improvements. Clarence Hill Jr. from All City DLLS proposed that the Cowboys might be able to acquire him for a future fifth-round pick.

“If the Cowboys are still competitive, they should trade a fifth-round pick for Cooper,” Hill noted in a September 21, 2024, post on X.

Chiefs just saw Amari Cooper seemingly become available via trade

Cooper is currently in the final year of a five-year, $100 million contract he originally signed with Dallas, carrying an $8.7 million cap hit this season. According to Spotrac, the Browns have made adjustments to his contract, making him more attractive for trade.

“The Browns converted all but $1.21M of WR Amari Cooper’s 2024 salary into signing bonus, making him an extremely affordable trade candidate. Now: $941,111 Deadline: $605,000,” Spotrac noted on X on September 30.

Can Amari Cooper Still Help the Cowboys?

It’s important to understand why Cooper is being discussed in trade rumors. His performance this season hasn’t matched the levels he reached during his Pro Bowl years.

In the first four games, Cooper has recorded 16 catches for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns, with three of those games seeing him finish with 35 or fewer receiving yards. However, the Cleveland offense hasn’t been particularly effective.

Last season, Cooper made the Pro Bowl, tallying 72 receptions for 1,250 yards and 5 touchdowns in 15 games. It seems unlikely that he has suddenly declined as an elite receiver over the offseason.

For context, the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Browns in 2022, swapping a sixth-round pick for a fifth-round pick. If Dallas were to send a fifth-round selection to Cleveland now, they would be giving up more than what they received in that trade.
