Detroit Red Wings captain is set to be sidelined for approximately two months due to an injury, presenting a challenge for the team during their upcoming road trip and beyond.
Coach Derek Lalonde announced on Monday that Larkin sustained a lower-body injury during the team’s recent loss to Florida. In his absence, Joe Veleno will step in as the top-line center alongside Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane, temporarily replacing Detroit’s leading scorer.
“It’ll likely mean more minutes for Joe,” Lalonde mentioned after practice. “It’s a good challenge for us. Every team faces injuries. We didn’t manage it well when Dylan was out last time, but I believe we’ll handle it better this time.”
The Red Wings lost three out of four games during Larkin’s absence in December, although Lalonde noted that the team was also coping with injuries to several other players at that time.
“We’ve been fortunate with our depth this season, and now it will be put to the test again. I have confidence in the team,” Lalonde said. “These are the challenges we face. If we want to stay competitive and push forward, we need to overcome these obstacles, and this is our chance to do that.”
