As anticipated, the Chicago Cubs are poised to implement major changes to their big league coaching staff. This shift is less about the team’s disappointing season and more about manager Craig Counsell having a full offseason to conduct a thorough coaching search.
Last year, there were many adjustments he couldn’t realistically make, and these changes were expected this offseason regardless of performance. Managers typically prefer to assemble their own coaching teams, and it’s important to support that process—especially for a highly successful manager like Counsell.
With that in mind, here’s the beginning of the changes:
Jesse Rogers reports that long-time first base coach Mike Napoli is out, along with newer hires James Adduci (one of several hitting coaches) and Darren Holmes (bullpen coach). Napoli was widely respected, so it’s likely that many within the organization are feeling his departure today.
More changes are expected in the coming days and weeks following the end of the season and the upcoming internal reviews. It’s a challenging process for everyone involved, and I wish all of them the best in their future endeavors.
