There have been mixed reports regarding the Chicago Cubs’ interest in New York Yankees star . While some sources indicate the Cubs may pursue the left-handed hitter, others suggest they are hesitant to invest the significant amount he could command.
There’s no denying Soto’s elite talent; many consider him one of the top three hitters in baseball. At just 25 years old, he could be among the most valuable players in the league, second only to Shohei Ohtani.
However, that doesn’t automatically mean the Cubs should offer him a massive contract. The team certainly needs additional offensive support, but would one player alone be enough to achieve their objectives?
If the front office believes that adding Soto would significantly enhance their chances of success—and it likely would—then pursuing him could be justified. However, this must come with plans to bring in other players, as the current lineup has not performed well enough in the past 18 months to rely solely on Soto.
If his contract were to drop to around $400 million, which is still a substantial sum, it would make sense for the Cubs to consider him. However, Joel Reuter from Bleacher Report suggests that securing Soto might actually require closer to $500 million.
At only 25, Soto is already in his seventh MLB season, boasting impressive stats with a 160 OPS+, 200 home runs, and a 36.2 WAR. The Yankees face the dilemma of whether they can afford to keep him or risk losing such a game-changing player.
Looking at his performance—he’s currently hitting .286/.418/.575 with a 178 OPS+ and 40 home runs—it’s clear why his potential value is so high. His success in the intense environment of New York could indicate he would thrive in another challenging market like Chicago.
As the offseason approaches, the Cubs need to prioritize boosting their offense, and Soto would certainly contribute to that goal.
