The Oilers have announced that 23-year old has been released from his tryout and assigned to the AHL. Additionally, Two prospects have also been sent down.
The recent roster cuts were anticipated following last night’s preseason game, which both defensemen participated in.
Max Wanner has been ranked as high as the fourth-best prospect in the Oilers’ system and is considered the second-best defenseman after Beau Akey. The Oilers drafted Wanner as a long shot in the seventh round of the 2021 Draft, and his stock has since risen significantly. At 6’3″ and a right shot, Wanner has a natural advantage, and he also possesses impressive skating skills for his size, making him effective in a shutdown defensive role. As he enters his second season in the AHL, continued development could position him to contend for a spot on the Oilers next year.
Bob Stauffer reports that the Oilers currently have 41 players at training camp, meaning more cuts are likely in the coming week. There’s competition for the fourth line center position as well as two defense spots, with Noah Philp, James Hamblin, Mike Hoffman, Troy Stecher, and Travis Dermott all vying for those roles.
The Oilers have four preseason games remaining before kicking off the regular season on October 9th against the Winnipeg Jets. Coach Knoblauch will continue to trim the roster, with most junior players already sent home, leaving only professionals at camp. Over the next two weeks, it will be interesting to see if any player can earn a spot on the roster through their performance.
