The Houston Astros encountered greater challenges this regular season than during their four consecutive AL West championships.
The Houston Astros have secured their fourth consecutive AL West title and seventh in the last eight years. Joe Espada, who joined the team as bench coach in 2018 after their first World Series win, has been pivotal in this successful era.
Under his leadership, the Astros have dominated the AL West, only missing the title in the shortened 2020 season. This year is especially significant for Espada, as he steps in as manager following Dusty Baker’s retirement.
Despite facing challenges, including a 10-game deficit in mid-June, the team rallied to reclaim the division. Espada expressed his deep emotions after the victory, stating, “Tears came out of my eyes… I love this team, and being in a position to compete for another World Series is special… This one is more special for me as a first-year manager.” Having a World Series ring from 2022, Espada now aims to leave his mark on the franchise’s legacy as the Astros strive for a third title. The memory of last season’s ALCS loss to the Texas Rangers will fuel their drive in the postseason, but for now, both the team and Espada deserve to celebrate their achievements.
