Just In: Cubs Add Depth, Acquire Highly Rated Reliever from Brewers

On Monday, the Chicago Cubs claimed right-handed reliever Enoli Paredes off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Paredes, who will turn 29 on Saturday, posted a 1-0 record with a 1.74 ERA and one save in 17 relief appearances for the Brewers. He faced a right forearm injury earlier this season, which sidelined him for more than two months.

The Cubs also recalled right-handers Gavin Hollowell and Caleb Kilian from Triple-A Iowa ahead of their three-game series in Philadelphia. Right-hander Jorge López was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right groin strain, while right-hander Trey Wingenter was optioned to the Arizona Complex League.

López, 31, joined the Cubs after being released by the New York Mets in June and has a 1-1 record with a 2.03 ERA and two saves in 24 appearances. The Brewers designated Paredes for assignment on Friday when they called up right-hander Kevin Herget from Triple-A Nashville.

In his career, Paredes holds a 4-3 record with a 3.06 ERA, 51 strikeouts, one save, and 41 walks over 53 innings in 54 relief appearances, having pitched for the Houston Astros from 2020 to 2022. The Cubs had a spot available on their 40-man roster after designating right-hander Shawn Armstrong for assignment last week.
