Texas Rangers pitcher has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, effectively ending his injury-plagued season as the Rangers are out of playoff contention.
Scherzer, 40, was set to start Saturday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, but right-hander Dane Dunning (4-7, 5.38 ERA) will take his place.
This marks Scherzer’s third stint on the injured list this season. He made just one start for the Rangers—a four-inning no-decision against Seattle last Saturday—after previously missing six weeks due to right shoulder fatigue. He began the season on the injured list following back surgery, returning on June 23.
Overall, he finished the season with a record of 2-4 and a 3.95 ERA over nine starts.
A 17-year veteran, Scherzer holds a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA. He is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, an eight-time All-Star, and has two World Series titles to his name.
Among active pitchers, he ranks second to Justin Verlander in wins, innings pitched (2,878), and strikeouts (3,407).
The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the Mets at the 2023 trade deadline, but he has only appeared in 17 games for Texas, going 6-6 with a 3.57 ERA over 88 1/3 innings and 93 strikeouts.
In another move on Saturday, the Rangers recalled rookie right-hander Gerson Garabito, 29, from Triple-A Round Rock. He has a record of 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA, 10 walks, and 19 strikeouts in 24 innings across 16 games (two starts) for Texas this season.
