The Chicago Cubs are still clinging to the hope of making a late-season push for the MLB postseason. Although the odds aren’t in their favor right now, there’s still a slim possibility.
Jed Hoyer and the front office share this optimism, but it’s clear that their focus is already shifting towards the offseason.
It’s highly probable that the Cubs will be aggressive in their offseason moves. Hoyer has expressed his desire to have the team back in serious contention by 2025, which will require adding new talent to the roster.
One of the biggest offseason questions revolves around star first baseman and outfielder Cody Bellinger. He has the option to opt out of his current contract and explore free agency if he chooses.
The upcoming offseason will be crucial for Chicago. While Bellinger seems likely to remain with the team, there’s still uncertainty about what might unfold.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post shared his thoughts on the matter, expressing doubt that Bellinger will leave.
“I think this is the one that will not opt out. Obviously a terrific player, versatile guy, but I would say that he would stay.”
Chicago would likely be thrilled if Bellinger chooses to stay. He’s one of their top hitters and has demonstrated his ability to anchor the lineup when healthy.
During the 2024 MLB season, Cody Bellinger has been hampered by nagging injuries, causing him to miss some time. He has appeared in 92 games, posting a .276/.335/.425 slash line with 12 home runs and 46 RBI.
While these numbers fall short of his expectations, Bellinger has still contributed when healthy.
At 29 years old, the former NL MVP hasn’t had the standout season needed to justify opting out. Staying with the team for at least another year and aiming for a stronger comeback in 2025 would be a smart move.
If Bellinger stays, it would allow the Cubs to concentrate on addressing other key areas. They could benefit from adding a catcher, a closer, and possibly another big bat.
